And de Pauw was not alone in extending Buffon’s degeneration argument from animals and indigenous peoples to the more general case of Europeans and their descendants in the New World.

It seemed to his colleagues that Buffon’s writing abilities were a bit too sharp, and that his popularity and that of Natural History were more a matter of style than substance—something that most savants did not appreciate. ”38 Others were more discreet and couched their comments in backhanded compliments. ”39 Rousseau was impressed with Buffon the writer, but not Buffon the thinker: “His writing will instruct me and please me my entire life. ”41 This distinction between style and substance in Buffon’s Natural History would become important in the argument over American degeneracy.
